The Palestine government struck tonight at the activities of Arabs against illegal immigration into the country of Jews, which crystallized this morning in a clash near Nathania, but at the same time warned that measures will shortly be introduced to check all lawless entry.
Today’s outbreak, in which several Arabs received slight injuries, occurred when a party of Arabs dressed in the uniforms of scouts, passed through Nathania toward the seashore in order to engage in patrolling activities against illegal immigration.
SINGING IRRITATES RESIDENTS
The Arabs, according to the report, were singing and “otherwise irritating the residents.” Sporadic fights started, apparently culminating in a free-for-all on the seashore outside the colony. One Arab was found not gravely injured some kilometres to the north and others apparently sustained insignificant hurts. The punishment was dealt out to the Arabs by a group of thirty or forty whose identity is unknown.
Detachments of police were sped to the scene. An investigation was promptly begun and order now prevails again.
COMMUNIQUE PROMISES ACTION
In a communique issued tonight the government stated that High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope, acting in concert with the Secretary of State, plans to obtain the enactment “of the necessary measures for securing the frontiers against all illegal immigration.”
The use of Arabs to frustrate attempts of Jews to land in the Holy Land illegally was assailed in the communique, which asserted that it must end because of its tendency to promote breaches of the peace. For some time past the government has thus engaged
