Comparative peace reigned in the knit goods industry yesterday with two-thirds of the Knit Goods Workers Union, branch of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, reporting to work yesterday. Speedy settlements with independent bosses are expected momentarily.
Picketing still continued, however, in front of the Star Sportswear Corporation, 568 Broadway, and small independent corporations. A tentative agreement was signed Saturday between the union and the employers, the Metropolitan Knitted Textile Association.
Approximately sixty strikers picketed the Star Sportswear yesterday without police interference. For the first time since the strike at the Broadway company started ten months ago mass picketing was permitted. It is understood that the police are “laying off” as a result of instructions issued to police by Chief Inspector Valentine at the Mayor’s request.
Because of the mass picketing the Star Sportswear Corporation closed yesterday while George Schaib, manager of the company, announced that he plans to seek legal advice.
