Serious clashes between Jews and Arabs occurred here today. Police, alarmed at the prospects of a new outbreak of anti-Semitic riots, intervened energetically.

Minor clashes have taken place during the past few days, which have ended without casualties on either side. However, an atmosphere of tension pervades the entire city and both police and military forces are eyeing the situation anxiously.

Garrisons in the principal Algerian cities have been strengthened in the expectation of further anti-Jewish outbreaks. The Constantine massacre has led to widespread propaganda against the Jews all over Algeria.

In many cities the Jewish population has appealed to authorities for protection, citing the increase of anti-Semitic propaganda as evidence that their fears are well-grounded.
