Jewish organizations to prevent the establishment of ghetto schools for Jewish children ended in failure. Jewish parents in the city are protesting against the new order, which means their children will be segregated, but will receive no specific Jewish education in the municipal schools.
A “cold pogrom” against the Jews of Austria has been in progress for the past few months. Without resorting to the violence methods of the German Nazis, which the Austrians condemned, the government has dismissed Jewish employes from public service and professional posts.
Hundreds of Jewish bank employes, doctors, nurses and numerous other Jewish workers have been dismissed in recent weeks and applicants for government posts have been required to prove “Aryanism.”
The Christian Socialist party, the leading political group in the coalition government, has openly called for the cleansing of Austrian life of Jewish influence, and also has demanded numerus clausus for Jews in public and professional life.
