More than 50,000 persons are expected at Yankee Stadium tonight, when the theatrical production, “Night of Stars,” will be presented by the amusement division of the United Jewish Appeal as a non-sectarian effort to raise funds for the relief of German Jewish refugees.
More than 300 celebrities of stage, screen, radio and opera are contributing their services. More than 3,000 additional performers will take part in sketches, scenes and revues.
Nathan Burkan, chairman of the amusement division, asserted that every artist whose name appears on the program has made a definite commitment to participate. The program has been fixed by Louis K. Sidney, chairman of the program committee, by definite timing of each act, indicating the certainty of each performer’s appearance.
STOKOWSKI TO CONDUCT
This morning the 1,000 musicians who will constitute the orchestra will begin rehearsing at Yankee Stadium under the direction of Boris Morros. Leopold Stokowski, conductor of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, will lead several numbers tonight.
The Stadium will open its doors at 6 P. M. There will be three stages. Twelve 1,200-pound amplification horns have been placed at various points in the Stadium.
Among the personalities and acts scheduled for tonight’s performance are:
Edwin Franko Goldman, conducting a brass band of 300; the Michel Fokine ballet in “Prince Igor”; the Parade of American Composers, led by Gene Buck, president of the American Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers, and including Irving Berlin, George M. Cohan, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Sigmund Romberg, Richard Rodgers, Rudy Vallee, James Rosamond Johnson, Arthur Schwartz and others; the Gus Edwards revival of his first vaudeville number, with Walter Winchell, Lila Lee, Harry Rose, Georgie Price, Mae Murray, George Jessel, Charles King, Jack Pearl and Herman Timberg; the parade of orchestra leaders, with Harold Stern, Jack Denny, Don Bestor, Paul Whiteman and Lud Gluskin.
MASTERS OF CEREMONY
The masters of ceremony will be George Jessel, Harry Richman and Harry Hershfeld. One hundred acrobats are coming to the Stadium from various parts of Greater New York.
