Religious persecution is “repugnant to Americans,” an editorial in the Burlington Free Press states.

“Our traditions are rooted deep in the great movement for freedom of conscience which swept the world during the days when this continent was being opened to settlement by Europeans,” the editorial says.

Calling freedom of religious belief “one of the cornerstones of the American republic,” the Free Press asserts that on this account “religious persecution is particularly repugnant to Americans,” adding:

“The people of Burlington will welcome an opportunity to aid the worthy cause of helping the victims of religious persecution.” This is a reference to a benefit entertainment to be held at the city hall at which Ludwig Lewisohn, the writer, will speak.
