Daniel Auster, Abraham Elmaleh, Samuel Eden, Isaac Ben Zvi, Joseph Hachmashvilli and Haim Solomon, newly-elected Jewish municipal councillors, today met with representatives of leading Jewish institutions here and decided to demand the appointment of a Jewish mayor for this city.
The defeat of Ragheb Bey Nashashibi by Dr. Hursein Fakri El Khaldi has created a peculiar situation in which many of the Arab leaders now favor appointment of a Jewish mayor. The once powerful Nashashibi party, which was badly defeated in the recent municipal election, is urging the choice of a Jew for mayor of Jerusalem, pointing out that a majority of the population is Jewish and that at least half the voters on the election rolls are Jews.
If a Jew is appointed mayor of the city, he will be the first Jewish city head of this ancient city since the time of the second exile. Haim Solomon, one of the newly – elected councillors, was vice-mayor of the city for some time.
A united Jewish ticket was put in the field in the election after lengthy negotiations between the various Jewish political groups. The ticket, which was completely successful, was bitterly opposed by the Zionist Revisionists, who nominated their own candidates.
