George Z. Medalie, outstanding New York attorney and leader in Jewish communal activities, has been named to represent B’nai B’rith on the Joint Consultative Council, it was revealed yesterday. He was named for the post by Alfred M. Cohen, international president of B’nai B’rith, and succeeds the late Max J. Kohler.
The Joint Consultative Council is composed of representatives of the American Jewish Committee, the American Jewish Congress and B’nai B’rith. Its purpose is to provide for concerted action by the three organizations in matters affecting all the Jews. Mr. Medalie is a member of the B’nai B’rith Henry Jones-Lebanon Lodge No. 79 in New York and of the B’nai B’rith wider scope committee. He was former United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York and was the Republican candidate for the United States Senate in 1932.
He was born in New York City in 1883. After his graduation from Columbia University he began the practice of law in 1907. He served as assistant district attorney of New York County from 1910 to 1915.
Mr. Medalie is a trustee of the New York Federation, a member of the administrative committee of the American Jewish Congress, president of the Jewish Board of Guardians and director of the Washington Heights Y. M. H. A.
