Robert I. Cohen Sr., successful department store operator here and in Houston, and the president of the American Maid Flour Mills of Houston, died here yesterday after a brief illness. Born in London, England, the son of an art dealer, Mr. Cohen was seventy-eight years old.
Landing in Boston, he came to this country at the age of sixteen. Five years later he settled in Galveston and in 1882 he married Miss Agnes Lord of this city who now survives him. Mr. Cohen was active in religious circles and was for thirty years president of Congregation B’nai Israel. At the time of his death, he was president emeritus.
Besides his widow, Mr. Cohen is survived by his sons, Robert Jr. and George S.; a daughter, Mrs. Gladys Cohen Blum; a sister Mrs. Fannie Buena de Mesquita of Ramsgate, England, and several grandchildren.
