Two hundred members of the Butcher Workers’ Union employed by the New Deal Kosher Butcher Bosses’ Association will go on strike November 1, Joseph Belsky, secretary of the union, said yesterday.
The walkout decision came as a result of the employers’ failure to renew contracts with the union.
It was revealed yesterday that 200 ‘scabs” who signed up with the New Deal association in answer to advertisement are in reality for the most part members of the union. This ruse was used, Belsky said, to leave the members of the association without butcher workers when the strike occurs.
Offers of aid in the union’s strike against the chain stores were received from David Dubinsky, president of the International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union. Joseph Schlossberg, secretary of the Amalgamated Workers’ Union of America; the Neckwear Union and the Painters’ District Council, it was declared.
Belsky said little trouble was encountered in renewing contracts with independent butchers, most of whom are members of the Federation of Kosher Butchers.
