Rabbi Louis I. Newman of Congregation Rodeph Sholom, speaking yesterday afternoon at the Community House of Temple Emanu-El at a meeting of the Jewish Teachers Association, said American education must emphasize tolerance, liberalism, social justice and the democratic technique.
“We have no room in this nation for the concept of ‘Gleichschaltung’ or coordination, with its insistence that the individual conscience must be silent and the free expression of personal judgment punished,” he declared.
“We have no room for any artificial race theories which tend to subordinate any particular racial minorities to the ballyhoo propaganda of the temporary majority, seeking employment at any cost for its members.”
The duty of the teacher, Rabbi Newman said, is to encourage in the pupil a mood of historical analysis and criticism but, at the same time, to ask the pupil to suspend judgment as to concrete policies until reaching maturity.
