Unless the Hotel New Chamberlin of Old Point Comfort, Va. , which has been advertising in a manner offensive to Jews and has been selling liquor in violation of the State’s laws, executes an about-face on both scores, action will be instituted to have the Federal government revoke its operating license, it was announced here by Senator Harry F. Byrd of Virginia. The hotel is on a Federal reservation near Richmond.
Senator Byrd has protested to Secretary of War Dern and President Roosevelt on both the racial prejudice and liquor violation counts. In his protest to Secretary Dern he has demanded that the War Department take active charge of the hotel. If this is not done at once, he threatens, he will offer legislation at the next session of Congress requesting that the hotel be placed under Virginia laws.
