general medical practitioners have been thrown out of work.
The same fate has been meted out to Jewish specialists who have been ousted from famous clinics, from state hospitals, from all governmental public and semi-public sick funds; the Jews have played a leading role in the Austrian medical world and have been greatly responsible for the position Vienna holds in the field. The most important clinics have had famous Jewish professors directing them, who have attracted students and disciples from all parts of the world to this city to practice under them and learn their methods.
ONLY TOLERATED NOW
Today these men are only tolerated, their activities carefully scrutinized, they must not — God forbid — engage Jewish assistants and they are forced to dismiss Jewish colleagues or assistants with whom they have worked for many years.
There are to be found among these professors, brave and proud Jewish men, who, feeling enraged and insulted, have cast off everything and resigned. Their names are so famous throughout the world that their livelihood is safe; patients coming to them from all quarters. Their names are a watchword in medical literature.
Others remain, deeply moved by the ruthlessly increasing anti-Semitic program but fearful that their resignations might lead to more anti-Semitism and the dismissal of the few Jews remaining in the public hospitals and clinics whom they can protect to some extent.
THINK OF PATIENTS
They have another motive also in not resigning. Today it is not easy and certainly not agreeable for a Jewish patient to enter a public hospital and undergo treatment by anti-Semitic doctors. What will happen to the Jewish patients when these hospitals will have only “Aryan” physicians?
Energetic steps are now being taken against Jewish lawyers also. A “Christian-Aryan” lawyers organization has been created with regulations openly aiming at depriving Jewish lawyers of their practice. Members of the present Austrian cabinet who are lawyers have joined the openly anti-Jewish organization. Even the Minister of Finance, who asks Jewish financiers in Austria and abroad for aid in their government’s financing, is a member of this association. The Minister for Constitution and present Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is a member of this official, anti-Semitic organization—and not even secretly.
APPEALS TO PUBLIC
The association publishes appeals to the public against using Jewish attorneys and gives the appeals authority by listing the member of the cabinet who belong to the association.
Fascist Austria is seeking profit out of the misery of its own Jewish population. Since its anti-Semitic policies already have succeeded in forcing large numbers of Jews to emigrate, why let the profit go to foreign railways and shipping lines? But Austria has no sea-border and no shipping. Therefore, the idea was conceived and effected for a direct express train from Vienna to Haifa. Austria wants to keep all the business of the emigrating Jews herself. Provisions have been made for all categories of Jewish emigrants, tourists, capitalists and chalutzim. All must leave Austria and, to show their gratitude, they leave to the hospitable country a nice “parting gift. “
