The appointment of Rabbi M. Wahl as Chief Rabbi of Warsaw, a measure proposed by the Agudath Israel, ultra-orthodox group which has a majority among orthodox Jewry, has caused a furor in Jewish circles.
A vigorous protest against the nomination of a chief rabbi was published by the Warsaw rabbinate, which pointed out that for more than fifty years there has been no chief rabbi, but a rabbinical council in charge of orthodox affairs.
Rabbi Ozer Grodzenski, leader of the Moazat Gdolei Hatorah, also protested against the plan, despite the fact that he is a member of the Agudath Israel executive Warsaw Chassidic rabbis are, however supporting the plan to make Rabbi Wahl chief rabbi.
