Aaron Greenwald, the twenty-one year old football player on the 1934 City College team who died Sunday night in the Morrisania Hospital of injuries suffered in the New York University game on November 10 at Ohio Field, will be buried this morning at Mount Morris Cemetery from the Riverside Funeral Chapel. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia, which set in after an operation for a ruptured intestine. In his last hours he was delirious and was calling out his team’s football signals.
Greenwald, who lived at 1346 Grant avenue, the Bronx, was kicked in the stomach in the third quarter of the game between City College and New York University and was carried off the field. At first it was believed that he had been knocked breathless and Greenwald himself treated the injury lightly. Apparently recovered after the game, he started home on the subway, collapsed, and was rushed to the hospital where he was operated immediately for a ruptured intestine. He was on the road to recovery when pneumonia set in. Numerous blood transfusions from his teammates, proved unsuccessful.
Greenwald lived with his parents. He was a junior at the college, where he had been studying for a bachelor of science degree. He entered the college in 1932, after graduating from Morris Evening High School.
His injury coming in the last game of the season, was the only serious one suffered by a City College player. Whether his death will have any effect on the college’s attitude toward the sport could not be learned.
Professor Walter Williamson, professor of Hygiene at City College said, “The death of Greenwald is a profound shock. It is the first time such an unfortunate accident has occurred.”
