According to Italian press reports of the audience granted Austen Chamberlain, British Foreign Secretary, by Pope Plus XI, the Pope urged Great Britain to protect Catholic interests in Palestine against Zionist “invasions,” in return for which Catholic loyalty all over the world towards the empire was promised.
