With the holiday season at an end, New Yorkers may begin the new year by choosing from the series of lectures on various Jewish subjects offered them by New York Jewish institutions.
Two series of lectures will be given at the Free Synagogue. Rabbi Stephen S. Wise will take for his theme “Jewish History in the Making: The Story of the Nineteenth Century,” while Rabbi Morton M. Berman will deal with “New Books by and about Jews.” At each of the lectures Dr. Wise will give a summary of important Jewish news events.
Lee Simonson, scenic designer, will inaugurate the 1935 “Contemporary Thought” lectures with a discussion of “Varieties in Stage Settings.” Mr. Simonson will speak Friday morning, January 4 at Hotel Savoy Plaza. Other speakers in the series include Professor Raymond Moley, John Erskine, Dr. Alfred Adler, Robert Nathan and Miss Helen M. Hall.
Dr. David de Sola Pool will resume his Monday evening lectures at the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, dealing on successive weeks with “The Jewish Outlook” in Russia, Poland, Germany and Austria, United States and Palestine.
James W. Gerard, former ambassador to Germany, will open the lecture series sponsored by the Brooklyn Jewish Center on January 7.
