A severe shortage in railway rolling stock which caused a jam in the routing of orange shipments has resulted in heavy damage to citrus growers. Cases of oranges were exposed on station platforms for days and rather than wait for refrigerated cars, shippers sent their goods to the ports in open trucks.
Cases of oranges originally approved by fruit inspectors were rejected owing to deterioration.
