A modern precedent for the Nazi cult of Wotan-worship is suggested by B. H. Liddell Hart in “A History of the World War,” just published by Little, Brown & Company. Captain Liddell Hart believes that the reason for the German choice of Verdun as a point of attack in 1916 was that “Verdun was the ancient gate of the West through which the German hordes had passed to attack the Gauls.” He also cites the German habit of naming their trench positions after heroes of the Nibelungen—Siegfried, etc.
