An order of deportation issued by the government against two Palestinian Jewish schoolmasters has created considerable commotion here.
Dr. Kalai, principal of the Shamash School, and his brother, a teacher of Hebrew at the school, were summoned to police headquarters and told to leave Iraq forthwith. No previous warning had been given them. Dr. Kalai has been in this country more than two years.
Both men were handcuffed and are alleged to have been beaten when they refused to sign a statement. They were not allowed to return home to get their clothing and luggage. But for the intervention of some of their friends, they would have left Irak practicaly destitute.
The police offer no reason for the deportations, but the local Arab press claims they were the result of the discovery that the two Jews are “Zionist Bolsheviks.”
