A curious scene illustrating Jewish misery in Poland was enacted in a Warsaw court today when a Jewish shopkeeper was convicted for violating the Sunday closing law.

The judge fined the shopkeeper three zlotys, approximately 60 cents. The accused then pleaded that he would prefer being sentenced to imprisonment since he was not in a position to pay the imposed fine. The judge obligingly sentenced him to one day in jail.
