A birthday present of about $10,000 for the Ben Altheimer Fund of the National Jewish Hospital at Denver was received yesterday by Ben Altheimer on the occasion of his eighty-fifth birthday. The birthday remembrance that pleased him most, the check was turned over to the fund which was started five years ago with a gift of $30,000 presented to the hospital for its establishment.
Mr. Altheimer is one of the founders of the hospital and has been its national treasurer since 1899. Assisted by his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Weil, he received friends at his home yesterday, including a committee representing the Denver National Jewish Hospital. The committee was headed by Justice Samuel D. Levy, the New York chairman, who handed over to Mr. Altheimer a check for the hospital as a birthday tribute.
STARTED FLAG DAY
Mr. Altheimer, who is a pioneer promoter of Flag Day, was made honorary member of the Jewish War Veterans at their annual conference in Bridgeport, Conn., in recognition of his services for the American flag.
Speaking on the National Jewish Hospital of Denver, Mr. Altheimer said:
“I look upon this hospital as a monument to Jewish philanthropy because we are non-sectarian in our activities.”
Analyzing the relief work and the charity activities during the depression, Mr. Altheimer declared:
“The Hebrews had a word for charity which also meant justice, and relief should be worked out, not in the spirit of charity, but in the concept of the word justice. At my age it is a great pleasure for me to see the younger people stepping in to carry on the leadership in health and welfare fields.”
