An overflow crowd of about 5,000 persons attended the funeral services yesterday morning for Alter Ben Zion Shapiro, philanthropist, who died early Wednesday morning at the age of 73 at his home, 215 East Fourth street, after a long illness.

Officiating at the services were Rabbis Samuel Elias Elkin, N. Rappaport, Kalman A. Goldberg, secretary to Chief Rabbi Gabriel Zev Margolis, who was ill, and the Rev. Samuel Kantaroff. The services were held at Adath Israel Synagogue, 203 East Broadway, which he founded as a burial society in 1901.

The long procession stopped for prayer on its way to the services at the Hebrew Free Loan Society’s headquarters, 108 Second avenue, which Mr. Alter founded in 1891.
