The Maimonides celebrations commemorating the 800th birthday of the Jewish philosopher who was born in Spain and buried in Palestine, started today all over Palestine. A full month will be devoted to the celebrations.
The celebration was opened at 3:15 o’clock this afternoon with a solemn ceremony on Mount Scopus, site of the Hebrew University. Representatives of all Palestine Jewish communities of the Rabbinates and of the World Zionist Executive, participated in the ceremony. Consuls and diplomatic representatives of many countries were also present.
Mr. Elmalieh, a member of the Jerusalem Municipal Council, opened the celebration in behalf of the Vaad Leumi, the Jewish National Council of Palestine. He announced that a large pilgrimage is being arranged for April 22 to Tiberias, the city in Palestine where the grave of Maimonides is believed to be located. Thousands of pilgrims are expected to participate in the ceremonies which will take place on that day at the grave of the great Jewish philosopher and physician.
