The Jewish population of Danzig, numbering about 8,000, is looking with anxiety toward the Parliamentary elections Sunday, which will practically, though not officially, make Danzig a part of Germany.
The fact that Danzig is a territory under the supervision of the League of Nations, worries the Nazis very little. Nazi leaders here are certain that the elections on Sunday will give them a sweeping majority which will enable them to change the constitution of this city.
The entire city was decorated today with Nazi flags in honor of General Goering, Dr. Goebbels, and other Nazi leaders from Germany who are scheduled to address the final election meetings here and to witness the results of the elections.
JEWISH STORES CLOSE
Many Jewish stores were closed today and will remain closed until several days after the elections in view of the dangerous anti-Jewish propaganda which has developed in connection with the election campaign. The presence in Danzig of Julius Streicher, Franconia’s notorious anti-Semite, has made it impossible during the last two days for Jews to conduct their business on a normal basis, since Streicher is openly advocating the emulation of Nazi terror against Jews here along the same lines as in Nuremberg, the German city of which he is the ruler.
The Polish representative in Danzig today lodged a second complaint with the Danzig Senate protesting against the anti-Jewish boycott which affects Polish Jews and demanded that strong measures be taken to stop the Nazi picketing of Jewish stores.
CHARGES TREATY VIOLATION
“The boycott propaganda against Jews is a direct violation of the commercial treaty existing between Poland and the Free City of Danzig,” the protest of the Polish representative says.
