Flags were flown at half-mast here today and public buildings were draped in black in honor of the late Adolph S. Ochs, publisher of the New York Times, for whom funeral services took place this morning in the Julius and Bertha Ochs Temple, which he built in memory of his parents.
The entire population of the city was asked by the Mayor to suspend business during the time of the funeral. Similarly the Retail Merchants’ Association requested its members to suspend activity.
A guard of honor from Jewish congregations stood watch beside the candle-lit bier throughout the night. The funeral services this morning were conducted by Rabbi Abraham Feinstein, assisted by Dr. T. McCallie, pastor of Central Presbyterian Church.
At the conclusion of the services the body was placed aboard a train for New York, where services will be held Friday morning at Temple Emanu-El, of which the deceased was a trustee.
The body will be placed in a mausoleum which Mr. Ochs built in the Temple Israel Cemetery at Mount Hope, in Westchester County, near his home in White Plains, N. Y.
