New York City’s drive for its share of the $3,250,000 United Jewish Appeal campaign to provide relief and rehabilitative aid for the Jews of Germany and other lands and for the settlement of Jews in Palestine will be launched formally this evening (Sunday) with a dinner at the Hotel Commodore.
The fund-raising effort is under the combined auspices of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the American Palestine Campaign. The quota for ### five boroughs has been set at $1,250,000.
Nearly 1,000 persons are expected at the dinner. Reservations have been made by outstanding figures in the city’s philanthropic, communal, social and commercial life. The speakers will include Felix M. Warburg, Nathan Straus, Morris Rothenberg, Rabbi Jonah B. Wise and Mrs. Richard Percy Limburg.
Maurice Levin, president of the Hearn department store, has been appointed vice-chairman of the Appeal campaign in this city, according to an announcement by Mr. Warburg, national chairman. The merchant will join I. Edwin Goldwasser, Michael Schaap and Mr. Straus in directing the drive in the metropolitan area.
Tonight’s dinner will bring to a climax preliminary activities that have been going on for several weeks to perfect an organization capable of carrying the message of the Appeal to every section, group and industry in New York and environs.
A luncheon for the furniture industry was tendered in honor of Mr. Straus Friday by Herbert M. Rothschild at the Hotel Vanderbilt. The furniture industry will take an active part in the drive. Mr. Rothschild is the chairman of the committee in this field.
