The Central Blad veer Israeliten in Nederland, organization of Dutch Jews, recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with a reception at the Amstel Hotel. Messages of felicitation were received from a number of prominent persons including Prime Minister Colijn and Dr. W. de Vlugt, Lord Mayor of Amsterdam.
The Prime Minister said in his message that he was glad that during the fifty years the Jewish population has retained the best traditions of Jewish family life, the observance of its religion and loyalty to its native land and the Royal House.
The Lord Mayor wrote that it is impossible to speak too highly of the importance of the Jewish population to Amsterdam. “The Jews who have come from other countries and settled here.” he said, “have been made to feel at home in this Jerusalem of the North, as it has been termed. They have helped to make the city economically prosperous and have shown a good civic spirit,” he writes.
