The Dental Society of New Jersey is today investigating charges of racial discrimination made against the Plainfield Dental Society by Dr. Herbert Shiff of that city.
In an affidavit signed by Dr. Shiff and presented at a meeting of the State society here by Dr. Mathew Rouse of this city, the Plainfield unit is accused of returning his check and application of membership in April. The charges, which created a sensation at the meeting, also stated that five other Jewish dentists who applied for admittance to the Plainfield unit had similar experiences. The five were named as Doctors William Marcus, Samuel Mintz, Aaaron Hirsch and David and Victor Levitz.
Dr. Guy Hillman of Plainfield, a trustee of the State body, defended the Plainfield action, asserting the unit could do as it pleased ### its own ranks.
The State Society, which reg### the charges of Dr. Shiff as seri### has named a committee of six### investigate.
Dr. Shiff is a graduate of the University of Iowa and is now an interne in the Muhlenberg Hospital of Plainfield.
