In the presence of Mayor Max of Brussels and British Ambassador Sir Esmond Ovey, a Palestine Pavilion was opened here today at the World Exhibition. The pavilion will be known as “Israel in Palestine.”
Mayor Max, in his opening speech, paid tribute to Jewish achievements in Palestine and emphasized that the Belgian people warmly sympathize with the Jews since they too have lived under a foreign yoke.
“The people of Belgium who love freedom and tolerance are happy to join in this Jewish fete,” he said.
The Palestine pavilion occupies 1,500 square meters and is twice as large as the Polish pavilion. It is divided into three large halls, the first displaying diagrams of the Zionist Organization, the Jewish National Fund and the PICA, showing the growth of Jewish activities in Palestine. The second hall is devoted to the display of products of Jewish industries in Palestine. The third hall is occupied by the offices of Palestine companies accepting orders for their products.
The Palestine pavilion was organized by the Belgium-Palestine Association, the leaders of which are Prof. Speyer, a non-Zionist member of the Jewish Agency; H. Goldsmith, a local industrialist and H. Toreziner, president of the Zionist Organization in Belgium. It was built by Belgian architects, in Oriental style, resembling the Palestine pavilion in the last Colonial Exhibition in Paris.
