A science faculty will be established at the Hebrew University this year, it was announced today by Dr. Judah L. Magnes at the formal ceremonies marking the opening of the university’s eleventh academic year and Dr. Magnes’ first year as president.
Dr. Magnes, formerly chancellor and at one time rabbi of Temple Emanu-El in New York, opened his address with eulogies of the late Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Dr. Shmarya Levin, Isaac L. Goldberg and other sponsors of the university.
Establishment of an agricultural college, which had been decided upon at a meeting of the Board of Governors at Lucerne in September, will not take place as yet, Dr. Magnes declared. A medical faculty, for post graduate work, he stated, will be added within the next two years. A student’s dormitory will be ready within a few months.
Dr. Magnes announced that the Board of Governors had authoring a budget of #77,000, of which 60,8 per cent is being furnished by American Jews as against 67.9 per cent previously.
Twenty scientists, refugees from Germany, have been engaged to fill faculty posts, Dr. Magnes said.
A bibliography of the university’s publications will be issued during the coming year, he disclosed.
Eight students are expected to be graduated this Winter, bringing to sixty-six the total graduated from the university. Dr. Magnes announced that 38 students were taking postgraduate courses leading to the degree of Ph.D.
Other speakers at the opening ceremonies included Z. Schocken, honorary treasurer, and Dr. Hugo Bergmann, newly elected rector of the university.
