Further efforts on the part of the Nazi relief authorities to deceive foreign opinion into believing that Jews are not excluded from the general Winter relief campaign are disclosed in the German press today.
The press reports a reception last night given by the Nazi Party’s foreign department for foreign diplomats and newspaper correspondents in the course of which Winter Relief Commissar Hilgenfeldt’s statement conveyed the impression that Jews have not been excluded from sharing the benefits of the general relief drive, which is contrary to fact.
“No exceptions have been made in the case of Jews in Winter relief,” Herr Hilgenfeldt declared. “To avoid friction, needy Jews have been placed under the care of Jewish central relief organizations of the Reich.”
Prior to the start on October 9 of the Nazi relief drive, an order had been issued by the Commissariat for Winter Relief in which it was stated that Jews were taking care of themselves in the matter of relief this year. No reference to this order wad made last night by Herr Hilgenfeldt. It was as a result of that order, labelled No. 39, that the central Jewish organizations of Germany decided to conduct their own campaigns for relief funds.
