Ground has appeared for believing that the attempt on the life of Dr. Jacob Isaac Niemerower, Senator and Chief Rabbi of Rumania, was an anti-Semitic plot. However, the semi-official statement describing Aurel Joneson, captured assailant, as a “religious maniac” dispelled any belief that there were political motives behind the attempted assassination.

Discussing the affray, in which Rabbi Niemerower was slightly wounded by one of three bullets fired at him, his family told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that there were three assailants. The police communique only mentioned one.
