The special conference of Nazi leaders called to map reprisals against the German Jews for the assassination of Wilhelm Gustloff, Swiss Nazi leader, opened today in Munich.
Mystery surrounded the parley and details were not available, but it was understood on the basis of reliable information that the Swiss Government’s ban on Nazi organizations has caused hotheads among the Nazis to moderate their demands for extreme measures against the Jews.
The Nazi leaders are highly interested in Nazi activities abroad, it was understood, and believe it advisable to refrain from actions which might arouse anti-Nazi sentiment abroad that might give rise to movements for suppressing Nazi activities.
German newspapers today featured an account of “Aryan” employers sending letters to Jewish workers informing them: “Because of the assassination of Wilhelm Gustloff, we do not see our way clear to retain you in our employ.”
Julius Streicher’s Der Stuermer played up the assassination today giving vent to extreme demands for action against the Jews and urging that no Jew be permitted to leave the Reich before a careful check-up has been made of his capital and tax payments.
Reports from provincial districts stated that Nazi agitators are inciting against the Jews in connection with the slaying and that Jews fear the incitement may give rise to attacks on them.
