A bill to ban kosher slaughtering of cattle and poultry, but amended to permit sufficient kosher meat for use within the country by Jews, Mohammedans and Karaites, was today adopted by the committee and will be voted on by the Sejm tomorrow.
The amendment, which was proposed by the Government, was adopted after the Sejm had voted to return the bill to the committee on being warned that a complete ban on kosher slaughtering would violate constitutional rights.
The committee also attached to the bill amendments (1) preventing Jews from selling kosher meat to non-Jews, and (2) prohibiting kosher slaughtering entirely in districts where Jews number less than fifteen per cent of the population.
Government representatives indicated it did not view the latter amendments favorably. The committee rejected amendments offered by Jewish deputies.
