General Francisco F. Franco, Spanish rebel army leader, yesterday addressed a letter to the Jews of Tetuan, Spanish Morocco, asking them to disregard certain anti-Semitic speeches broadcast from the Seville radio station since the beginning of the insurrection.
He confirmed, however, that the Jewish community there had been asked to make a “voluntary” contribution of 500,000 pesetas to the rebel cause.
Jewish refugees from Spanish Morocco were guarded in their reports, but it was learned that in the eight principal cities of Spanish Morocco Jewish life was more or less normal.
It was reliably learned that reports of rebels having shot members of the Jewish community in Mellila, Spanish Morocco, were untrue. A few of them had been arrested, it was said.
