The tax department today declared that no new order has been issued requiring wealthy Jews to deposit with the Government security equivalent to the flight tax imposed on persons emigrating with their capital.

Explaining reports published abroad in this connection, the department announced that existing regulations provide that persons suspected of planning to remove their capital illicitly can be forced to deposit security.

According to the department, that provision is now being applied against Jews “since we now have grounds to believe that certain persons may leave Germany without paying the flight tax (amounting to approximately 25 per cent of the capital involved).”

Despite reports to the contrary, there is no panic among the Jews, since very few cases have been reported of demands having been made for the security.
