Literary and artistic circles here were shocked today to learn the monument to the composer Mendelssohn erected here in 1892 had been toppled from its base and broken to pieces in an anti-Semitic demonstration, the Havas News Agency reported.

The destruction of the monument by a hostile Nazi band was condoned in party circles as an act of “homage to the spirit of Aryanism.”
