Plan Celebration of 500th Anniversary of Abarbanel’s Birth

An ambitious program to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Isaac Abarbanel, famous Jewish philosopher and financier, is being planned by a committee headed by Prof. Moses Amzalak, vice-rector of the Lisbon Technical University.

Abarbanel, born in 1437,was the treasurer of King Alfonso V. He was exiled by King John II and his large fortune was confiscated. He died in Venice in 1508.

The observance will include addresses by Prof. Amzalak on “The Life of Abarbanel,” Dr. Augusto d’Esaguy on “Abarbanel the Writer,” Dr. S. D. Sequerra on “A Great Statesman,” M. Diesendruck on “Abarbanel, Philosopher and Theologian,” and Dr. Adolfo Benarus on “The Abarbanel Family and Judaism.”
