The country was shocked today by the murder in Smilne of a Jewish family of four and their Christian maid. All five were found with their throats cut.
The dead are Shloime Fogel, 60, a textile merchant, his wife, 55, a daughter of 28, a child of four and the maid, 30.
Declaring this was the first mass murder ever committed in Lithuania, the central authorities announced they were taking extreme measures to discover the murderers. The victims were robbed of all their cash, but no merchandise was stolen.
