The German Government protested to the State Department today against Mayor LaGuardia’s remarks about Chancellor Hitler.
Cordell Hull, Secretary of State, expressed regret informally to newspapermen two hours later in reply to questions, but no statement of regret was conveyed to the German Embassy. His comment was a general statement that the United States regretted all utterances calculated to be offensive to a foreign government.
Indicating that there was little he could do, Mr. Hull said he had no definite plans in connection with the German protest except to ascertain the facts of the case.
The protest was conveyed by Dr. Hans Thomsen, counsellor of the German Embassy. He was said to have declared the Mayor’s remarks were unbecoming to an American official, particularly the head of a city to whose fair Germany’s participation had been solicited.
