The appointment of Dr. Isaac Herzog, former Chief Rabbi of Ireland, as Chief Rabbi of Palestine “reflects high honor upon our nation,” the Irish Times declared in an editorial today.
“We do not claim special credit for Ireland because she never persecuted the Jews,” the Times said. “The fact that other nations have seen fit to persecute the Jews renders our nation’s attitude more laudable by contrast.
“Here in Ireland the Jews are not a separate people; they are part of the nation. They have done fine service in our industry, our commerce and our art. We have been more than repaid by their presence in our midst.
“The choice of Dr. Herzog will bring Ireland’s name and reputation for kindliness to the notice of millions of Jews throughout the world. Our hope is that this reputation will be maintained for many years to come.”
