Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president of the American Jewish Congress, last night urged the Jews of Italy not to yield to Fascist demands that they “make peace with the Nazis in Germany or leave Italy.”
Addressing a dinner of the congress women’s division at the Hotel Roosevelt, Dr. Wise expressed the hope that the Italian Jews would “choose the noble, not the cays way” and declare “We dare not foreswear ourselves.”
Praising Cardinal Mundelein’s attack on the Nazis, Dr. Wise said the Chicago Archbishop had spoken “not on behalf of the Jews, not even on behalf of the outraged honor of the sons and daughters of the priesthood, but on behalf of the forces of religion and justice and civilization, which must stand together.”
Other speakers were Mayor LaGuardia, Dr. John H. Finley, editor-in-chief of the New York Times; Mrs. Stephen S. Wise, president of the women’s division, and Mrs. Bernard S. Deutsch, treasurer of the division, in whose honor the dinner was given.
