THE EVENING STANDARD REPORTS TODAY THAT A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE BRITISH BROADCASTING COMPANY HAS GONE TO GERMANY IN AN EFFORT TO OVERCOME NAZI OBJECTIONS TO A SCHEDULED BROADCAST FROM LONDON OF THE RECENTLY PUBLISHED CONCERTO BY SCHUMANN.

THE CONCERTO WAS SPECIALLY COMPOSED BY SCHUMANN FOR THE FAMOUS VIOLINIST JOACHIM, WHO PLAYED IT FOR THE COMPOSER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 1854. THE B.B.C. HAD ARRANGED FOR MISS DARANYI, A GRANDNIECE OF THE VIOLINIST, TO BE THE SOLOIST AT THE CONCERTO’S FIRST PERFORMANCE, WHICH WAS TO OPEN ITS NEWEST BROADCASTING STATION.

NAZI BAN ON THE PERFORMANCE IS TRACEABLE TO THE FACT THAT JOACHIM WAS A JEW. THE BROADCASTING COMPANY IS EXPECTED TO ISSUE A STATEMENT ON THE MATTER WITHIN THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

YEHUDI MENUHIN, WHO WAS TO HAVE PLAYED THE CONCERTO FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THIS COUNTRY, RECENTLY ALSO WAS FORBIDDEN BY THE NAZI REGIME TO GIVE THE PERFORMANCE.
