A HOPEFUL VIEW ON THE SITUATION IN PALESTINE WAS EXPRESSED BY BERL KATZNELSON, TEL AVIV EDITOR AND LABOR LEADER, AT THE OPENING SESSION LAST NIGHT OF THE THIRTY-FIRST ANNUAL CONVENTION OF THE AMERICAN POALE-ZIONIST ORGANIZATION. FIFTEEN HUNDRED DELEGATES AND GUESTS FROM ALL PARTS OF THE COUNTRY ARE IN ATTENDANCE AT THE MEETING, WHICH IS TO CONTINUE AT THE ADELPHIA HOTEL UNTIL SUNDAY NIGHT.

MR. KATZNELSON, EDITOR OF DAVAR AND SECRETARY OF THE JEWISH AGENCY’S POLITICAL COMMISSION, ASSERTED THAT DESPITE THE PRESENT VIOLENCE, THE BACKBONE OF THE TERRORISTS HAD BEEN BROKEN.

ENGLAND’S DECISION NO LONGER TO CONDONE TERRORISM, EVIDENCED BY BANNING OF THE ARAB SUPREME COMMITTEE AND DEPOSITION OF THE MUFTI, HE DECLARED, IMPLIED A DISTINCT CHANGE IN THE GOVERNMENTAL POLICY.

“PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT IN HIS CHICAGO SPEECH,” MR. KATZNELSON SAID, “DECLARED THAT THE CIVILIZED WORLD MUST PUT A STOP TO WHOLESALE MURDER OF INNOCENT CIVILIANS AND NOW ENGLAND HAS BEGUN TO REALIZE THAT IN PALESTINE.”

AS A CONSEQUENCE, HE ASSERTED, CONDITIONS IN PALESTINE WERE MORE HOPEFUL.

TRIBUTE TO FELIX M. WARBURG, WHO DIED IN NEW YORK YESTERDAY, WAS PAID BY DAVID WERTHEIM, SECRETARY OF THE ORGANIZATION, WHO SAID:

“ALTHOUGH WE WERE FARTHEST APART IN ‘ANSCHAUNG’, HE ROSE ABOVE THE PREJUDICES AND INDIFFERENCE OF HIS CLASS TO ASSUME A PLACE IN THE FRONT RANKS OF WORKERS IN THE JEWISH CAUSE.”

OTHER SPEAKERS AT THE OPENING SESSION INCLUDED PROF. CHAIM FINEMAN OF TEMPLE UNIVERSITY, A VETERAN POALE-ZIONIST; DAVID PINSKI, PRESIDENT OF THE JEWISH NATIONAL WORKERS’ ALLIANCE; DR. ISRAEL GOLDSTEIN, PRESIDENT OF THE JEWISH NATIONAL FUND; JOSEPH SCHLOSSBERG, CHAIRMAN OF THE PALESTINE LABOR COMMITTEE; RABBI SAMUEL WOHL, CHAIRMAN OF THE PALESTINE LABOR LEAGUE, AND OTHERS.
