The military authorities today commuted to life imprisonment the death sentence passed by an army court last week on Ezekiel Altman, 23-year old Jewish policeman, who had been convicted of firing at an Arab bus and killing an Arab boy Dec. 28. Altman had been the first Jew sentenced to death by, a military tribunal. Prayers had been held throughout the country for Altman and Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog intervened with the authorities.
Sir Charles Tegart, special adviser on Palestine police affairs, was understood today to have submitted a report on the police and Criminal Investigation Department advising that experts be brought from England and India and that Arab enlistments be expanded to fight terrorism.
