The State Department gave out today figures on American citizens living abroad, estimated as of Jan. 1. There were 5,896 in Germany, 787 in Austria and 5,190 in Czechoslovakia. The proportion of Jews among them was not disclosed.

Secretary Cordell Hull revealed that Hugh S. Gibson, retiring Ambassador to Belgium, four months ago turned down the position of Ambassador to Germany.
