The Manchester Guardian made an editorial plea today for clemency for the two Jewish youths sentenced to death in Palestine. The paper said their act in firing on an Arab bus was indefensible, but happily no Arab suffered death or injury from their shots. This is the first time that Jews have been sentenced to death for carrying arms, the paper pointed out, declaring that the sentence was a warning in itself which would gain rather than lose in effect if mercy was set beside justice and the sentence commuted.
