Prayers of intercession for the persecuted Jews of Austria and Germany were held today throughout the British Empire and in other countries at the call of Dr. Joseph h. hertz, chief rabbi of great Britain. many Christian groups joined in the prayers.
An Intercession Day resolution expressing “deep indignation about the persecution and defamation to which our defenseless co-religionists in Germany have been subjected, and which has been extended with increased inhumanity to Austria” was adopted by unanimous silent standing vote at a meeting of the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
Two Americans were on the platform as the resolution was adopted — Eddie Cantor, the radio and screen star, and rabbi Rausch of Louisville, Ky. Mr. cantor, who is visiting England to raise $100,000 for settlement of European Jewish children in Palestine, has already obtained 7,000 ($85,000) in less than a week that he has been here, it was announced by Neville Laski, president of the Board of Deputies.
The resolution, which was introduced by Mr. Laski and seconded by Sir Robert Waley Cohen, declared that the German policy “of deliberate cruelty puts everlasting shame on a nation which instigates it.” the resolution appealed to all those striving for peace to declare their reprobation of persecution and not to rest until complete equality was restored for “our brethren and their fellow sufferers in lands of persecution.”
The deputies and a crowded gallery heard Mr. Laski, in a three-quarter-hour speech, review German oppression. He said: “It makes one shudder to realize that a great power can deliberately adopt a policy placing outside the pale of humanity and law the members of the creed which gave to the world the first doctrines of morality.” he concluded that they would not despair, hoping for deliverance with the aid of god.
