The Spectator declared editorially today: “The Italian Government’s anti-Semitic pronouncements reveal a growing subservience to Germany, mentally as well as politically. Bread riots have recently been reported, and it is certain that Mussolini is greatly relieved if the people are turned from such prosaic preoccupations to the loftier sphere of the racial theory.”

The New Statesman and Nation expressed the hope that the anti-Semitic ideology would not develop “into the foul thing it has become in Germany.” The Daily Telegraph reported that several German Jewish physicians practicing in Italy since 1933 had been warned that their licenses would be withdrawn.
